Be A Tourist In Your Own Town

The weather is finally warming up for many of us (and for others it’s always warm, which must be really nice 😆), so it’s time to come out of hibernation and get out and about!

While there are many different activities to enjoy with your family this Spring (you can find some of our favourites here), one of the best ways to spend the day is being a tourist in your own town.

Whether you live in a small suburb or bustling city, there’s surely something new (or new-to-you) to explore. And what better way to do it than with your loved ones by your side?

So round up your crew and follow these tips for a fun-filled day of adventure!

Do Some Research & Plan Your Day

Just like you’d prepare for a trip to a foreign country in advance, put the same thought and effort into planning your day out on the town. A simple Google search or visit to your local tourist or welcome centre will give you a good idea of how you should spend your day. Make a list of the places you want to visit, the things you want to see and, of course, where you want to eat (while hitting up the most touristy restaurant is a no-brainer, you can also choose to support local, or try a place you’ve never been before)!

Pack A Bag

You may not be traveling far, but it’s going to be a jam-packed day, so it’s important to bring the necessities along with you. Water and snacks are must-haves, but feel free to bring anything else you and your family may need.

Slow Down & Take It All In

The whole point of being a tourist in your own town is to experience your surroundings in a way you haven’t before. So, rid yourself of any distractions, move at a slower pace, and take it all in. The best way to do this is to put your phone away (except to take photos, of course), walk or bike along routes that you’d typically drive, and intentionally take notice of everyone and everything around you.

Connect with Others

Don’t just take notice of those around you, try to stop and engage in meaningful conversations with new people you cross paths with throughout the day. Ask questions, share stories, and really listen. You can learn a lot from complete strangers - about them, about the location and even about yourself.

Capture the Day Through Photos

Taking photos throughout your adventures will make you feel even more like a tourist, plus, it will be fun to look back on the memories you made! You might be snap happy as you go, but if you don’t typically pull out your camera to document everything that goes on throughout the day, make it a game and create a selfie treasure hunt pre-trip so that you’re forced to take some great photos along the way.
