Family Meditation
There is nothing more important than family and time spent together, especially living in our busy and rushed society. That’s why it’s necessary to find a time and place in your home to just slow down and simply relax with them.
We recommend practicing meditation as a family. It’s a great way to spend time together peacefully and it can bring more mindfulness and focus to all of your lives. Here are some tips to help you get started on how to practice family meditation:
Show Your Family What Meditation Looks Like
Start off by showing your family, especially your little ones, what it looks like to be in a meditative state before having them join you. From there, show them how it is an important part of your daily life. In doing so, this will simply spark their interest – they may play around you or decide to sit next to you and try it for themselves!
Establish a Routine
Schedule a time each day to meditate. Typically, the mornings are the best time for meditation as it can help calm the body and focus the mind to prepare you for the day ahead. However, if this simply does not work for all, then meditating at night before dinner or an hour before bedtime would also be a great time to do your routine.
Create a Meditation Space in Your Home
Dedicate a space in your home for your meditation routine that’s far from interruptive noise such as televisions and phones. It doesn’t have to be a large part of your home, but it should be large enough to accommodate each family member meditating in the same space.
Play Background Music
Playing background music is part the meditation process. When having your children participate in meditation, oftentimes they may have difficulty sitting still and focusing on silence. That’s why we recommend playing background music during meditation, specifically Baroque music. This type of genre will sync up with the natural rhythm of the human heart and is known to help you fully focus and calm down anxiety.
Don’t Give Up and Just Breathe
At the end of the day, getting your family to start meditating will take time, so expect some bumps in the road. Your children may become restless after a few minutes or may not even want to participate. There are many scenarios that can go wrong, but as a parent, just breathe and keep moving forward with your own practice, stick to your routine and continue to have your children see you in the meditation space in your home. Eventually, they may join again and when they do, you can get back to a solid family meditation routine.
Try out these tips and practice your family meditation together! It’s great time spent together and beneficial for all minds, bodies and souls.
