How to Do a Digital Detox
What was life like before smartphones and technology? To be honest, we can’t even remember. Nowadays, staying connected digitally is a part of our everyday life. We’re listening to, watching, reading, and interacting with digital media daily.
But as we head into the holiday season, why not give up your smartphone, computer, and television and go on a digital detox? If you’re taking time off work over the holidays, it’s the perfect opportunity to unplug from technology because you don’t need to be online throughout the day. Taking a break from your electronics can be very beneficial as it can help you find new ways to improve your physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness. It will also allow you to spend more quality time with friends and family.
Not sure how to do a digital detox? Check out our tips below:
Put away your phone during meals
Phones at the dinner table are more common than you think. Even if you’re not checking your phone, having it on the table during a conversation with your friends or family can still reduce the quality of interaction. This is because our brains are waiting for our phone to light up with a text or notification, leaving us not fully present. So leave it out of site (and out of mind) the next time you’re enjoying a meal!
Set boundaries
It can be hard to start a digital detox, so if you’re having trouble putting down your phone, we suggest leaving it in another room so you refrain from using it. You can also set a schedule where you are technology-free for a few hours every day. Although you’re not cutting it out completely, it’s definitely a step in the right direction.
Remove distractions
Take advantage of the apps and features on your devices which allow you to turn off the notifications from social media apps and alerts from websites or every time you get a message. Your tech’s features can help control your overall use.
Enjoy More Paper Media
Take some time to read non-digital media like books, magazines, newspapers, and comics. There’s nothing more satisfying than opening a fresh new book. You can also take this time away from the screen to write your thoughts in a journal or drawing in your sketchbook.
Make It Work for You
All in all, a digital detox can be whatever you want it to be – do what works best for you and your lifestyle. You might consider picking one day of the week to go device-free, doing a social media detox or choosing to stop using a specific app, website or game that is taking up too much of your time. Over time, you may even push yourself to do more!
With the holidays quickly approaching, there’s no better time than now to start your digital detox. You’ll be more focused on living in the present when spending quality time with friends and family. It may be hard at first, but it can be a rewarding experience because you’ll be more mindful in your other activities and experiences. After all, it’s all about balance.
